Spiralsea – Essence (Re-Issue Review)

Listening to that record is like a trip down memory lane. A strong scent of the 80s seeps throughout it, lightning-fast riffs and relentless thrash drumming, and before you know it you’re in a pair of skinny jeans, drinking beer until you pass out, in some concert hall in California.

Spiralsea definitely knows how to riff, and they’re showing it on this full length which was first released in 1993, and now re-released in 2020. The album has all it takes to make for a perfect 80s thrash banger. The blazing-fast riffs, the mid tempo breaks, and even lower-tempo tunes such as “Clear Brightness”.

The solos are in the same spirit as what was done back then, and the breakdowns are as efficient as a break gets.

The production doesn’t stand out of the crowd either, as it’s in the same codes as the 80s standards, and the guitar tones reek of an overdriven metal classic tube amp.

Overall, the album fits within itself, and it knows its identity: that of a thrash metal decent album.
