Static-X – Project Regeneration Vol. 1 (Album Review)

When reviewing albums, you are tempted to just make an album at face value and judge it without the background but upon listening to Project Regeneration Vol. 1, this way of going about it is simply impossible. A posthumous release, a project undertaken by original members Tony Campos, Koichi Fukuda and Ken Jay, is always a bit of a risk, particular using unreleased recordings of such an iconic frontman but Project Regeneration Vol. 1 captures the essence that is Static X.

The danger of post-humous releases is that they run the risk of missing the mark without the in-person touch and can often feel like resample, but this does not fall into that trap. While this album will touch the hearts of long-time fans, the album is a brilliant showcase of the sound that Static X has curated over the years so for first-time listeners, it is a brilliant gateway into the previous releases.

It is almost haunting to hear Wayne’s voice again, but that feeling is lost almost instantly from the jump.

Kicking off Hollow with it’s driving guitars and trademark industrial sound is both melodic and heavy, with Wayne’s voice curving over the guitars in his signature hypnotic fashion. Bouncing fantastically between heavy, melodic and catchy- this album hits all the marks that will have you both headbanging and grooving with the track Terminator Oscillator being a perfect representation of this. Seeing as this is volume 1, it will be curious to see what the next project will look like but as far as this album goes, it’s not just a fitting tribute to a ground-breaking musician but an overall solid release.
