The Loving Tongue – Temple Of Love (Album Review)

The Loving Tongue - Temple Of Love

South Australian band The Loving Tongue and their fifth offering of hard rock/metal Temple of Love. A very honest, true sound with a strong NWOBHM influence but with their own twist to give the album its own sound. A slight sprinkling of folky elements and mellowness adds to the unique, complex, and interesting musical journey and good storytelling. I say storytelling because there is a real sense of a tale being told, set to classic metal and at times shredding, pounding heavy metal music. Some of the long complex lead solos are simply quite mesmerizing and brilliant and suit the song structures and feel perfect.

Jim Petkoff really shows what an outstanding guitarist he is.

There are long passages with no vocals at all which lets you settle into his guitar show. Well worth the price of admission. Joe Toscano provides the drums which at times provide a good tempo and beat to accompany the lead guitar and lead vocals and at other times provide quite a bit more thunder to be more of a focus.

Some of the songs really have quite a bluesy feel to them, a vibe provided by the drums and Tom Petkoff’s bass.

The clean vocals on this album are excellent and soar throughout providing the strongest link to that NWOBHM sound. They are strong, melodic, catchy, and tell the stories well, but still give lengthy breaks to let the music shine through.

Some of the standout tracks are Lost Princess which really is an excellent song with a strong galloping bass and drums outstanding vocals and some amazing musical breakaways, featuring some of those lead solos I have been championing. The other standout in my opinion is Lady in Black which is probably the most metal song on the album, with an almost thrash old school sound to it, with little pieces of folk running through it. The clear soaring vocals instantly change the sound, which lifts the song up to glide above the rest, a song you find yourself hitting the repeat button for. Wind instruments can also be found giving another little complexity to the music. A truly excellent song.

Written in the Stars is a rather beautiful slower, progressive song and really showcases the band’s musical talents, with a large amount of the song an instrumental, with a nice pace pick up towards the end.
The Loving Tongue has made a very good album Temple of Love and I would recommend this album especially fans of classic heavy metal.
