Disentomb – The Decaying Light (Album Review)

Disentomb - The Decaying Light

I’ve been given Disentomb’s latest release The Decaying Light to review, and instead of giving this a traditional review like everyone else is going to do, I’m going to do something a little different. I’m going to introduce you to Gary who is going to review it for me.

Gary works with you in a faceless corporation and he walks up to your cubical.

Gary’s 4-year-old shirt now barely covers his ever-expanding stomach. His coffee cup is on a slight angle; threatening to spill its contents onto the floor as he rests his elbow along the fake wall of your workspace. Gary: “What’s this?” He picks up your freshly bought new album by Disentomb and examines the cover. “Oh, this is that screamo stuff right?” He leans back to give out a scream, catches his throat and goes into a slight coughing fit.

A small drip of coffee trickles to the floor. Gary: “You know what I don’t like about this stuff? You can’t understand the vocals. Like AT ALL. He just yells and yells in this really deep tone. He’s so angry, like the angriest guy you’ve ever heard. I wonder why he’s so angry all the time?” He sniffs and wipes his nose on his sleeve. Gary: “And the guitars, well, they’re just all over the place. Like, pick a note will you?” he laughs at his own joke, “pick a note and stay with it!”

He takes a sip of coffee. He turns to the back of the cd and begins to read. Gary: “Collapsing Skies, Centuries of Deluge, Dismal Liturgies, man, these guys should be writing books, not screamo music,” he scratches the top of his head with the corner of the cd case. Gary: “It’s probably one of those bands where they snare drum sounds like an upside-down ice-cream container.” He sniffs and hoists up his pants.

Gary: “It probably even has that one track that starts with a slower guitar to make them seem all moody.

Or better yet! An outro track that only acoustic, like you, wouldn’t even know it was on the same album! And they probably spent a fortune on production. What a waste of money so you can produce this garbage.” He leans over to place the cd back on your desk, puffs up his chest and continues his lecture.

Gary: “The only thing worse than the band and they’re over the top fast-playing, are the dunderheads that listen to their music head-banging away like they’re part of some stupid angry family. You guys are just angry and society just doesn’t want you anymore.” He takes a gulp of coffee. You slowly stand up from your chair and lean toward Gary, he looks at you with his ugly smile and you shake his hand. Looking into his eyes you say, “Thank you; that is perhaps the best compliment the band and people like me have ever received.

” Printed on the side of the CD in handwriting are the words: “Suitable for those who don’t fit neatly into society.”
