Obsidian Monolith – The Descent (EP Review)

The ability to evoke emotion is probably the highest challenge of any musician, but it is especially difficult for metal musicians. This is mainly due to the fact that metal musicians are trying to communicate extreme emotions that some may have not felt before, but to truly create something that makes the listener ‘feel’ what the writer was feeling is an amazing feat and something Obsidian Monolith have done with their EP release The Descent.

The EP opens with haunting piano work situating this band firmly in the melodic death metal genre. You are next hit with Axel’s distinctive Australian bark. Maurizio’s melodic creations are accomplished and dripping with tragedy. Throughout the release there are nods to traditional melodic death metal structures and elements that have not gone unnoticed, but on a first listen, it would be great to see future releases develop those structures further to become uniquely Australian.

If EPs are used to give potential fans and bookers a taste of what a band is about, then this release has accomplished its purpose. A clear vision into the descent of man and an exploration of nihilism, this release should be put on the shelf under ‘watch this space’. With so much melodic death metal being created in Australia at the moment, time will tell if the resurgence will attract a healthy fan base. Suitable for those with a clear yet confusing nihilistic view.
