All the world’s a stage, and Melbourne chaotic metalcore outfit The Last Martyr take their place atop theirs with new single Comedy/Tragedy. The eclectic new single releases just in time for The Last Martyr to debut it live at UNIFY Off The Record in Adelaide May 26.
Comedy/Tragedy is a bold, sassy new offering that mixes fierce electronic elements with heavy foundations and pop flare, produced by Chris Lalic (Windwaker). The track is about faking happiness while you’re fully aware that everything around you is burning. “So many of us wear a mask or play a character in our everyday lives and in a lot of ways, it helps us,” explains vocalist Monica Strut.
“But there comes a point where being incongruent with your true self, or ignoring certain negative aspects of our lives starts to take a huge toll. The song is written from the perspective of being aware that something is wrong but not wanting to admit it yet. It’s sarcastic, angry and just a little unhinged.”
The song moves through theatrical moments that contrast the manic highs with the diving lows, showcasing Struts lacerating screams. The swirling instrumentals compliment the sentiments of the lyrics, echoing the metaphor of the carousel spinning around in a cycle of denial. Watch the video here.
The Last Martyr release Comedy/Tragedy in time for UNIFY’s inaugural travelling Off The Record Festival in Adelaide on May 26. The quartet will play Hindley St Music Hall alongside Teenage Joans, Thornhill, Ocean Grove, Yours Truly and more, sharing a riotous collection of heavy belters. Tickets on sale now.
Forming in 2019, the ambitious four-piece have moved from strength to strength since their launch. Exploding with a vengeance in 2021 with Hindsight, the band earned triple j rotation, Unearthed feature artist and established their unique blend of nu-metal and heavy rock. Hindsight rounded the year out with triple j’s Lochlan Watt selecting it as his favourite track uploaded to Unearthed in 2021.
The band followed swiftly with, Afterglow a hard-hitting and nostalgic bop about young love and reflection through rose-coloured glasses. The bands carefully crafted sound found them a spot on Metal Injection’s relaunched Slay At Home monthly series, where The Last Martyr performed a mini live stream set to thousands of viewers.
Their blast-beat-led single Freaking Out was the final piece to drop from their EP, ‘Purgatory;’ once again produced by Lalic. The release was met with critical acclaim with NME declaring, “This five-track project is filled with gut-punch riffs, powerful vocals and propulsive blast beats,” and Hysteria Magazine gushing, “Hellishly good or heaven-sent, however you want to spin it, it doesn’t get more epic than Purgatory.”
Last year saw the release of previous single Sugar, touching on mental health struggles. The band took their latest single across the country on tour with hard rock heavyweights, Black Veil Brides (USA), supported shows with Dayseeker (USA), Paledusk (JPN) and nu-metal icons Sunk Loto. The Last Martyr played UNIFY Forever, Halloween Hysteria Festival, BIGSOUND 2022, Froth & Fury Fest, headlined Bonez Alternative Queer Party across the east coast and most recently jumped up to support Story Of The Year (USA) on their Melbourne and Sydney Knotfest sideshows in March.
