Calibre – The Storm Inside (Album Review)

Calibre - The Storm Inside

It always amazes me how heavy metal has penetrated every corner of the globe, yet here I am listening to an Iranian band shell out some devastating riffage on an unsuspecting world. Calibre’s debut album The Storm Inside is a groovy-melodic powerhouse, with some interesting melodies and hooks. I found myself bobbing along to this release and occasionally feeling the need to thrash around – it certainly is an eclectic mix of genres.

The vocals are heavy and go between deathcore to the clean singing of a metalcore band.

It’s a good marriage, but nothing we haven’t heard before. I also hear elements of thrash with a smidge of Nu Metal. I want to be careful not to get into a genre war, but I just wanted to convey that there is a huge mix in this release. The performance is pretty spot on and you can tell they have had a pretty hard taskmaster behind the desk.

The writing of the tracks is strong, with plenty of breakdowns to go around. The tracks sound crisp production-wise, with very little out of place. I might pick on the excessive distortion of the voice, but that is more of a personal preference thing than what ought to be presented by a band.

Overall, a really impressive first effort. Suitable for those who can’t decide what cereal they want to breakfast, so they just put a little bit of all of them in one glorious bowl.
