Theraphosa – Theraphosa (EP Review)

Where to begin? Well, this band hails from Paris, France.  The EP was first conceived after a chance meeting with the current drummer for Finnish juggernauts Amorphis, Jan Rechberger.

He has guided this opus as did Peter Tägtgren of Hypocrisy/Pain.

Fame gives huge props to this project after seeing the lead music video for the track Obsession. If that is not enough fine pedigree to pique your interest I don’t know what will.

The band take their name from the world’s largest spider. I first heard these guys with the lead track the aforementioned  Obsession with a real groove component that bands are in search of but in my humble opinion fall short vocally. It is a great balance between super clean vocals and growl that could raise hell.

A perfect illustration of this is the track The Butcher; these guys seem to have a formula that I haven’t heard yet. The last track The God Within has a savage pulsating opening riff that is sure to grab you and throw you backwards.

This is a really solid first effort in every aspect. A lot of blood, sweat and tears have been poured into this and you can hear it lyrically. It feels like a cathartic exercise and it takes you on a real journey. This EP will sadly fly under many radars – a fate suffered by many up and coming bands. However, I implore you to check it out particularly for fans of groove-laden bands. I will surely be keeping an ear out for these guys and am interested to see and hear what is next for them. They are certainly in my top 10 for 2018!
