Visualis – Sunrise In Black (EP Review)

The Sydney metal band, Visualis have released their debut EP Sunrise In Black. The band started recording Sunrise In Black in 2019. The global pandemic pushed back the initial release date of March 2020. After a new drummer joined the band they hit the studio again this year.

The intro track Dive Into… starts off with a piano riff that slightly changes but keeps the main hook with waves on a beach in the background. Then the drums come in with hard hits on toms and the guitars take over the main riff. It’s a great intro track that keeps building on its self. The next track, Delirium doesn’t waste too much time getting straight into the vocals. The chorus and the guitar solo are definitely the strongest parts of this song. The vocalist adds a bit more grit to his voice which suits his voice. Visualis show how dynamic they can be in this song by being softer in the verses and ramping it up in the chorus.

We Are The Disease is the name of the third track. This song wastes no time in getting straight into a great intro by the guitars and the bass holds the rest together. Once the verse starts everything is pulled back, with the guitars doing different melodic parts.

The bass is highlighted in this song. Unlike a lot of other bass players, you can tell that the bassist has thought out how the bassline can best complement the song and the other instruments. The chorus is very in your face compared to the verses. Towards the end, there are harmonies which is a bold move in a metal band, but it works. The vocalist then goes into growls which again is bold but works and shows off the vocalists dynamics.

The song that stands out for me on Sunrise In Black is Doom. It starts off with a heavily distorted bass then the guitars come in, then the drums and it reminds me of the main riff of A New Level by Pantera. It builds into a call and response between the lead guitar and the rest of the band. Just after the first verse, a choir comes in, which again is very bold for a metal band but they make it work.

The song ends with a keyboard part that sounds like a church bell.

Visualis have broken the rules with some of the things that they do that isn’t seen very often in the metal genre. They are able to make it work and it shows that they’re not like every other metal band out there, that they don’t want to fall into the typical stereotype a lot of other metal bands find themselves locked into.

For fans of hard rock, alternative and metal.
