Sacred Reich – Awakening (Album Review)

Sacred Reich - Awakening

When you review new releases, it is easy to get caught on the flashy side of things.

The releases that a polished within an inch of their life so that they almost sound inhuman. But I think there is a place for those bands who execute what they are about with precision and without apologies.

Sacred Reich’s latest release Awakening is the latter in that example, and I’m so grateful that that is the case.

This release is unapologetically thrashed. All of the traditional elements are there; thrashy drums with the occasional tom-based beat; alternate picking and excessive power chords; bordering on singing choruses and killer solos. Basically, if you’re an early thrash fan, there is just so much to love. I mean, you can almost hear the tight, ripped denim jeans, the baggy black t-shirt, white sports shoes and the battle jackets.

Ok, now that the love-fest is out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about my gripes. In some places, the toms are really hard to hear, and the hard-hitting nature of the music can be lost there. The guitar tone is a little thin for my liking (unless you’re talking about the solos, they’re pretty spot-on) and lastly, aside from some key sections, I feel there is a fundamental lack of bass guitar in the mix. I’m reaching a bit here, but I think it is important to present this for what it is – warts and all.

Now back to my praise: I just love that this band is doing their own thing, and they do it so damn well. I’m rocking away here happy with what I’m listening to. It’s a damn solid effort. In some regard, this release is like Nutella. You shouldn’t change the recipe, and you should be slapped forever wanting to. Suitable for those who have a long neck for breakfast.
