INTERVIEW: Dane Brown of Sunk Loto on reunion and future of the band

Interview by Andrew Massie

Sunk Loto

If you had to list the most important heavy Australian albums of all time, it’s likely that Sunk Loto’s 2003 release Between Birth and Death would be near the top, and metal aficionados still consider the band as one of the most influential home-grown bands of the early 2000s. Signed to Sony in 1999 when the average age of the band members was 16, Sunk Loto released an EP and two albums over their 10-year history. They toured the world with bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Suicidal Tendencies, Perfect Circle, Deftones, Sevendust and staked their claim as an epic live band at festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Vans Warped Tour, Splendour in The Grass, and Falls.

Now, after 15 years apart, Sunk Loto have returned to the stage, with multiple sold out shows in Queensland earlier this year, and three shows remaining this November. The shows feature all four original members, Jason Brown, Dane Brown, Luke McDonald and Sean Van Gennip, who have come together to reconnect with their fans, entertain, have fun, and reignite their love of playing music. We talk to drummer Dane Brown to find out what it has been like to return to the stage and what the future holds for Sunk Loto.

On what it felt like to be back on stage again as Sunk Loto after 15 years:

Dane: The very first night it was really fun, I couldn’t relax the whole night but it was still great, I was buzzing afterwards. But then the second night when we played the Triffid I personally felt like everything just fell into place for me.

On what made the band come back:

Dane: Without even mentioning the band or playing at all we all decided to get together and grab a burger and sure enough by the time that little luncheon was finished, it was on, we decided to jam again.

On what the future holds for Sunk Loto:

Dane: Yeah for sure it’s writing something new so we’re hoping once we finish up the next three shows in Melbourne and Sydney, maybe take a week to recollect and get back to writing.
