Chud – Killing Machine (EP Review)

Chud - Killing Machine

CHUD, tell you they are as heavy as a black hole! Well, I think they might be right. Killing Machine is the name of their EP and it’s heavy, chaotic, and groovy enough. Clocking in at just over 13 minutes, this release bangs you between the eyes and ears and then leaves you reeling before you have had a chance to catch your breath. Death metal, with a touch of deathgrind would be the best way to describe what you will hear, with a very low, and heavy sound and vocals of the gravel growl style apart from the chorus of Grave Digger. Only one song on Killing Machine is over 3 minutes with all the others around 2 minutes which doesn’t leave much time for playing around. The songs are meaningful and to the point and never really go off the beaten track. My favorite track on the album Godfuck is a ripper with plenty of malignant riffs, a good hook, a rather catchy chorus, and a fantastic and out-of-the-blue guitar solo which does add a bit of variety and depth to the song and album overall. Kill It is the last track and is just plain good metal fun. Simple catchy demonic.

The track that has me undecided is Grave Digger.

It was a fantastic opening riff that had you toe-tapping for sure and some really good musical passages, with Jones’ well-delivered growls doing the verses. But then comes the strange bit, a rather weird sounding clear vocals that sound rather sickly and are not very melodic that really spoils an otherwise good song. I appreciate the attempt at diversity but the result wasn’t good.

Jones does both the guitar and vocals and really is the backbone of this record and is a very talented musician for doing so.

The growls and guitar metalness are excellent. Bass is hard-driven by Tobias Ahzi Malek and the drums provide a good crash and bang to everything else, this is handled by Novax.

It would be interesting to see how a full album by CHUD would sound because for an EP there didn’t need to be a whole lot of variation and it certainly delivered on the intensity and heavy factors but may get a little tedious after a while.

CHUD has an excellent sound and has certainly brought that across well on Killing Machine. I enjoyed listening to this EP and would recommend it.
