Nuclear Warfare – Lobotomy (Album Review)

From the twisted minds of a South German band, they have released their 6th full-length album, Lobotomy. If their intention is to attack your senses and make you snigger at life, then they have managed to achieve some sense of this.

As the symbol of a nuclear sign, there are three points equating to each member of the band but at times still lending their talents to other projects.

There is Fritz (Stormhunter) on bass/vocals, Sebastian Listl (ex-Speedwhore), and drummer Alexandre Brito (Andralls).

Their aggression is apparent and their intent to deliver an audible assault is accomplished.

Their intention to shock comes right off the sharp side of a scalpel with the graphic display on the cover designed by a Brazilian graphic and tattoo artist, Edu Nascimento. Skull doctors driving pins into an eye definitely brought a feeling of deep unease as the eye is just that much more personable as we are more reliant on our eyes than other body parts with no replacement available. Despite the name of the album, there are no brains visualised but your head may explode between earbuds. You’ve been warned!

The guitar tone is pretty solid throughout the album. The crunching notes whip through the air with a frazzled electrical vibe. The style of music reminiscent of the thrash scene of the country. This 3 piece band has a tight fit with a down-to-earth fun side that mixes their combined negative feelings of distrust and hatred with an off-piste sense of humour. Death by Zucchini could certainly be an indication of this. While the guitars and production are tight the vocals would be the divisive factor. At times Fritz’s voice caves under the immensity of what is being sung and perhaps his voice wanders in direction losing its rigidity and overall tone.

Guitars predominate the album with some minor sonic journeys.

Age of blood has a circular rhythm to it that gets your head swerving. Then the tempo increases dramatically and we hit the thrash. Overall the music is designed just to be hard and create moshpits.

Lobotomy was recorded at the Oversonic Studio in São José dos Campos (Brazil) under the direction of Friggi MadBeats and mastered by Neto Grous/ Absolute Master in Capivari. Their sound has the rawness of two nations with a thriving need for thrash. We all need a little thrash.
