Fenrir and their album of power/battle metal focusing on Norse Mythology.
The album starts with military-style booming drums and sets the tone for a rather dramatic and epic-sounding release. There is the traditional power/speed metal pace to the album, particularly track 2 Jarnvid, but with outstanding and intelligent use of the flute by vocalist Duncan Jones that creates a completely different feel and a wonderful melody throughout. Duncan Jones also provides the vocals on the album although sparingly at times, they are brilliant, clean, and melodic, and with a great sense of storytelling.
The highlight of the album is the song Freyr’s Despair as it feels like they bring all of the elements together to deliver their masterpiece, with deep booming drums, a slower, heavy rhythm, and a masterful lead solo, with the flute once again providing that signature melody.

Great song.
Fenrir is obviously a band that knows exactly the sic they want to produce and that’s precisely what they have achieved. It’s nice to hear a band do their own thing and quite comfortably stray from the metal mainstream.
Not everyone may fully appreciate this album as it does appeal to the power/folk/Viking metalhead, however, I still think this should be given a listen as I found this album thoroughly enjoyable.
