For the uninitiated of you playing along at home, this is the debut album from up-and-coming Gold Coast titans ROME. Featuring former members of late 90’s technical metal giants “Devolved” and Techno/Death merchants.
“The Berzerker” the opening track “The Uprising” lulls the listener into a false sense of security with an electro brooding orchestra of noise. Fronted by the energetic and ever-commanding Nik Carpenter the thing that I have always admired about the aforementioned is his ability to engage and hold the audience and does so with ease in absolute spades. From track 2 through to the closer “X” is a showcase of brutish crystal clear guitar work and Thor-like drumming the track “300,000” is bone-chilling and captivating. The only criticism I have of this album is the bass sound is somewhat muddy and lost in the mix the Devolved trademark electro sound is used sparingly on this album. Which I see as a blessing as they are really trying to forge a new and exciting sound for the 2000s and not wanting to be pigeonholed as just another sideline project overall a great first effort from some serious game-changers, I will sign this review off with some lines from track 9 “End”.
