Tidal Arms – Tidal Arms (Album Review)

Tidal Arms - Tidal Arms

This is their second album, but strangely self-titled. Yet again, the Metal-Roos team has surprised me with a very diverse band. Let’s get the technical stuff out of the way first. They’re a very talented three-piece from Brooklyn NY and mastered by Alan Douches who seems to be the man of the moment. Genre… not so obvious, but there’s definitely an element of heaviness – does that help?

Gooski’s ladder opens with some uptempo riffing plus aggressive vocals, then the serious riffing and tempo changes start. It’s very, very good. There’s always a dangerous line between being so clever the music loses the edge or direction and writing a technical masterpiece that succeeds in its objective. The latter has been achieved, at least with the first song. Mirror Box is a kind of atmospheric song which moves into a traditional prog-rock feel, which did lose its way a little and didn’t feel like it worked to me. It’s probably my least favorite song on the album. Dunston Mass opens with clever, lilting chords that make me feel boozy and off-balance, and turn into an interesting enough song but I would not have put these two songs at the start of the album. They are noticeably less unique and less powerful than the rest of this great album.

Jungle of dust grabs my attention however and gets things back on track again. Mad glacier is a heavy as hell doom instrumental. Molasses is great and as strong as Gooski’s ladder. Tide Alarms is a very solid track also, and the vocals are a stand out as it builds and builds.

Beach torture despite the name has one of the prettiest introductions I’ve ever heard on a metal album and really shows the range of these guys, as it develops into a slower, writhing beast that I am now listening intently to. It’s a standout song on this album and is absolutely my favorite.

Vocals are yelled and screamed, (which I like very much) but actually quite understated in the mix, which suits the overall sound. At times the vocals are more of an accompaniment, which while unusual, is effective.

It’s an ambitious album and they take some chances, most of which pay off with a brilliant album which I will definitely listen to again.
