Odious Mortem – Synesthesia (Album Review)

Synesthesia by Odious Mortem is a solid death metal album. Enough said?

The album begins with Dormant Retribution. The opening track sets the pace for the entire album. Of particular note is the drum work on this track!

Death Metal songs, albums and bands all too often resort to a blast beat or double kick, but the drum work here shows depth and variety in Odious Mortem’s sound. The second, third and fourth tracks of the album are: Condemnation Foretold, Ruins of the Timeworn and Replenish the Earth.

In Abominable Form is the fifth song on the album. This is a catchy song with fantastic riffs scattered throughout.

The riffs alone do not make the song though, it’s Odious Mortem’s willingness to slow down their tempo at unusual times – the song reminded me a little of early Dissection. The sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth tracks are Eagle’s Tower, Cave Dweller, Spirit Hole and Synchronicity.

There are minor pauses and semi-jazzy interludes throughout the album which really make it a pleasure to listen to. The album concludes with my personal favourite track Dissonant Theology. It is unusual to hear a death metal album of this quality. Odious Mortem balance the sheer ferocity of death metal with genuine talent and technicality in each song.

This album is for fans of The Faceless, Cannibal Corpse, Nile and Dissection!
